I just finished watching
the movie The Lobster. The movie is a French Film with an American accent. The
movie I think could be broke down into three sections. The first was long with
one character, the second is short with both characters inseparable, and the
last is shorter with the two character separable. I am making the movie into
sections because of what the main characters action.
The main
character, David played by Colin Farrell, is going through a life alternate
situation. He checks into the hotel for loners after the divorce. The hotel is
for people who have recent broken from relation and looking for partner. In
this world there is no patience for people to stay without a mate. They have 45
days or are turned into an animal.
The first part of the
movie, it begins with a focus on the movement of David as he first prepares to
leave his home and heads to the hotel to check in. In the hotel, everyone is
giving the same cloth and stripped of everything that is personal to make them
look equal. The women wear dresses and the men wear casual clothing. The movie
is narrated by Rachel Weisz throughout and she gives foresight into the mind of
David.
David plans to be turned
to Lobster if he does not get into relation within 45 days. The people that are
inside in the hotel are part of what the normal society. The people whom reject
the social order are the loners. The live in the woods in hideout trying to
surivive by being undetected. The guest of the hotel hunt down the loners. For
each loner that the guest catch, they receive an extra day inside the
hotel.
Just like the hotel has
rules,the loners have their own rules. Their world of the loner is the total
opposite of hotel. The loners are a group that defy the code of how to get into
a relationship by living closed society. Both worlds are opposite of each but
are each cannot complete the humanity of a person. The close net relationship
of the loners would create imitate relationship out people staying with each
other, but rejects the notion all together. In the other hand, the world of the
cold, mechanical like atmosphere of the hotel makes it hard to imitate but
requires it in the end.
David comes to the hotel
with his brother. His brother had been turned into a dog because he failed to
get into a relationship in proper time. The movie shows the relation of David
in the hotel with in five women and two men. The women are the Maid, The
Heartless woman, The Nosebleed woman, Nosebleed woman best friend and The
Biscuit woman. The maid feels like someone that David could like but is not
allowed to courtship with since she is not eligible. The Biscuit woman is the
woman how offers herself to David but he refused. The nosebleed woman is
beautiful but not compatible, and her best friends is too in love with herself.
The Heartless woman is someone that he made the wrong choice courtship with
since she was truly heartless.
The two men are the
Limping Man and Lisping Man. Both men became friends with David from the first
day. Both men represented the two extreme of this world. The Limping man is the
one willing to do anything to escape the nightmare of the hotel and marry the
first person he thinks he could be compatible with, and the Lisping man is the
one doomed to become an animal from the start without the hope of escaping.
The fute between the
hotel and the loner is represented by what each group wants from the other. The
hotel wants to hunt down the loners and the loner want to break the illusion of
the hotel. Both extremes create from the people behavior that is not tolerable.
For someone like David and everyone else in this world, the only way to be
compatible with another partner is by being similar in something that is the
both are unique together. An example the Limping man was married to someone
that a Limp.
The world created a
mechanical feeling out of people that they are not able to release themselves
from. They needed to act in their mechanical method to survive. There isn't
anything that nature about this world. The way the people react shows how
unnatural the world is. The characters only way of survive is to adopt.
Throughout the movie, the characters adopt in the most mechanical way possible.
