The remake was not as good as the original. The movie forgot the most important element of what made the original great. I cannot believe that even with the star power of both Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, the older 3:10 to Yuma is far superior film. I am not saying that the newer 3:10 to Yuma is bad, but it was not same tension and the feeling of waiting for the clock as 3:10 is suppose to do. As I was thinking about the new movie, I did not feel hunted for the time to end to 3:10.
The new film lost the psychological feeling of the first. This is the reason that the original made it a better movie. The new movie added a lot details that was unnecessary. So the things a hated about the new movie was the longer plot, lost of meaning tension, and unnecessary action and killing, and unnecessary secondary characters.
The original film had four major thing that happen. The first Ben Wade steals gold using the cattle of Dan Evans and goes to tavern to get caught of Dan Evans as the major helper for the Sheriff. The second plot, Dan Evans agrees to move the fugitive Ben Wade from Bisbee to Contention City with the help of the towns drunk Alex Potter. The third plot is the heart of the movie is Ben Wade and Dan Evans are inside the hotel room. Ben tries to drive Dan to drop the good guy business and let him go to save his own life. The final plot is Dan taking Ben on the train by himself because he did not want to sacrifce less the town drunk that got killed in the process.
The new film added a lot of thing to the original to make longer and less psychological thriller. In the movie, we get to know that Dan Evans is Civil War veteran from the north with one leg whose the leg in the war. He was not a war hero. Dan is debt and is not able to pay back. A lot of things happen between Bisbe to Contention City that shows things that has nothing to do with the main plot. The son of Dan follows him from far and saves his life more than once. Ben Wade gets away and gets caught again. All of Dan Evans crews dies and it character is going to die anyways so why not try to get on the platform. Ben Wade helps Dan to give him honor as he almost killed. Ben Wade kills his crew for killing Dan.
So, I am not sure what to expect. I know old movies need to show that bad guys have to lose, and the new movie wanted to show how bad the west was. It just lost of things by trying to be something else.
