The movie got in mind more than it should have. Ace in the Hole was good to certain point. The point where we the audience had to see the main character lost it; lost me. The movie directed by Billy Wilder at the height of his fame, and during the middle of great film career. The movie is full of suspense that I thought it was brilliant.
The main character Chuck Tatum, starring Kirk Douglass, is newspaper man that had be fired from every place that he worked in the big city. He made it to small town and he was ready to start fresh. He gets temporary job that turned out becoming a permanent job. Chuck and the newspaper young photographer Herbie head to take pictures of fair far a few hours drive from town. In the way, they stop at diner with gas in the middle of nowhere to fill up and eat.
While he was sitting down eating, he heard about a local man that got stuck in mining hole. To the man distress, the person that saw him first was Chuck. Chuck knew that he had the story that would get fame. For Chuck, he found himself the Ace that he thinks could bring the big story. As he predicted, he got everyone attention and the world was interest in the story of the man that was being saved.
Chuck needed to drag the story longer than it should have. In the heart of the era, if you are bad guy, bad things happened to you. For Chuck, he was not a good guy. We eventually see fail and everything falls apart. I was thinking about a remake for this film. I just could not think about anybody that was good enough to the main character. I mean the intesnity of Kirk Douglass was off the chart that I thought was amazing. In the same time, director Billy Wilder is not easy to copy with steady coolnes.
